The Handbook  – 10th August 2020

We could create a list of the reasons why we love London so dearly and it would turn into a never ending catalogue of the city’s lively, luxurious and creative scene. It’s rich in history, renowned for its unbeatable architecture and is home to some of the best fashion houses in the world. But if you’re looking for somewhere in London that encompasses all three of these factors under its belt, you’re going to want to explore Burlington Arcade, Mayfair’s original luxury retail landscape.

Slotted between Burlington Gardens and the bustle of Piccadilly, Burlington Arcade has become an iconic London institution, with just last year marking its 200th anniversary. Famous for its tail-coated Beadles, plethora of vintage watches and British charm, the Mayfair spot is best defined by its wealth of luxury retailers and brands, all helping to provide a bespoke and special retail experience for all clientele.

History is at the heart of Burlington Arcade; it’s entwined in the architecture and interiors and is noticeable from the moment you walk up to the building. Beadles, the smallest and oldest police force in the country, were first recruited under Lord Cavenish’s regiment, the 10th Hussars, to help safeguard the Arcade, and today still play a vital role in keeping the shopping district in top form. Head to toe in Regency inspired uniforms, the Beadles still impose some of their original rules, which humorously includes the banning of singing and whistling. Only Paul McCartney and Jayden from East London are exempt from the whistling outlaw, so if you hear any whistling get your camera at the ready because it’s likely to be the Beadles hero.

For London’s high end fashion set, Burlington Arcade is the go-to spot for an ultimate shopping experience, whether you’re after jewellery , and there are some incredible jewellers, our particular favourites include Susannah Lovis Jewellers  , Azza Fahmy and Annouska . Or whether you want to pick up the latest kitten toe heels from Manolo Blahnik. Make your way along the passageway and explore some of the world’s best luxury and lifestyle brands, including N.Peal, Lalique, Globe Trotter, Penhaligons, Strathberry, Roja Parfums, Crockett & Jones, Vilebrequin and Church’s.

Of course, being commonly referred to as the ‘Jewel of Mayfair’, one of the biggest attractions is the plethora of vintage watches and jewellery on offer. Notably it’s The Vintage Watch Company that draws in the watch lovers, housing the largest pre-owned collection of Rolex watches in the world, but David Duggan and Bell & Ross are definitely worth visiting too for something on the more modern side.

If you’re feeling a little peckish after you’ve scoured the boutiques, head to Ladurée to get your sweet treat macaron fix. Expect every macaron to be crisp on the outside with a soft and chewy middle. Yum. Or, get your caffeine fix courtesy of Noxy Bro’s, who opened their boutique this weekend following from their previous coffee cart located in the middle of the Arcade. Noxy Bro’s specialises in their own unique blend of coffee created from Brazil, Columbia, Ethiopia and Guatemala and became lockdown heroes in their own right, supporting the NHS during lockdown, providing 3000+ free coffees to all NHS staff at Northwick Park hospital.

Burlington Arcade is the place to head if you’re looking to level up your next shopping experience.
